Hot Topic of The Day: Kids Being Left In Hot Cars

I have no idea why a parent would thin it would be okay to leave a child in a locked hot car while they run in someplace for an errand. I can’t even begin to understand how someone can forget their child in a hot car – I just can’t understand at how careless these people can be to their children. In the last few weeks we’ve heard the godawful story about the man in Marietta, Ga who left his kid to die in his car while he was at work, which really upset me in a way I’ve never been upset before. This happened just a few minutes from where we live and I just can’t believe, that if he did it intentionally, that such evil exists in this world. I’ve also heard about a guy who left his kid in his car while he went to court and about a woman who left her child in the car while she went in to get a haircut.

What are your thoughts on this subject? It seems more and more of these types of incidents are happenning every single day.

This is beyond my comprehension. I am a single mom of four kids, I work full time, and am being pulled 482 directions on any given day. I get distracted and I may forget to stop and pick up milk or to grab toilet paper while I am at Wal-Mart, but never once have I gotten out of my car without my children following me. I honestly don't believe there is any excuse as to how you could forget your child in the back seat of your car. None.

I don't get it either. No parent I know has ever forgotten their kid and left them in the car by accident to roast to death. It's murder, and it's awful.

This is the same attitude I have; no matter HOW sleep deprived I've gotten, or busy my schedule-I never even came close to leaving my children in the car. The people who do it on purpose obviously need to be prosecuted. The people who "forget"... well... perhaps they should have thought twice before having children in the first place. When I posted a similar opinion on FB, everyone blasted me back with "a change in routine-someone new taking the child to daycare instead of their normal 'straight to work' protocol makes it entirely possible that they could get distracted and forget." Sorry, but IMHO-NO. Becoming a parent has definitely created an almost OCD where my children are concerned. If your job is so all consuming that it allows you to fatally forget you have a child with you... well then perhaps it's Darwinism at work. I do feel sorry for these people, I can't imagine ever recovering from this-and likely would ask to be executed in a similar fashion.

They are always on my mind and always by my side. I just don't understand it.

It is UNTHINKABLE!! How anyone could do this to a child intentionally is beyond me! The parent should be 'strung up"!!!!!!

My kids are always on my mind. I know people keep saying, " oh, you get so busy, sleep deprived, different routine, yada yada yada blah blah blah but when I get out the car, not only are my kids on my mine to get them out of the car, but my eyes glance to the back of her car and I see them. I know we all get busy, and have a lot going on at times, but Parents need to stop focusing on everything else, and make their kids first priority on their

I check when I come in the house that my dog has followed me inside so he doesn't get too hot. When our troops are being. Fired at and there are all types of distractions ad multiple responsibilities, they don't forget what to do or each other's position.....why? Because of the understanding of the responsibility that belongs to a person. Unless there is something truly wrong mentally, people don't forget to do what is necessary for the things that are the most important responsibility to them. I'll bet when we eventually have a punishment so severe for leaving the life that they hold the responsibility for in a hot car to die.....it will be almost completely stopped.

I don't doubt that parents who love and care for their children can make mistakes and use bad judgement. I think the importance of reminding the public about hot cars and swimming pools and other summer safety is being brought up due to this stuff. We are busy and overbooked and sleep deprived as a nation, parents are no exception and the work load is intense. I want to see over loaded parents be able to slow down, I want to see reminder posters in parking lots and parking centers.
